As the federal government shutdown continues, many community members are feeling its impacts, from disruptions in food assistance to uncertainty among federal workers.
Several agencies and organizations are stepping up to provide resources and support for those affected.
Food Assistance and Basic Needs
If you are experiencing a loss or reduction of SNAP (Basic Food) benefits, help is available:
- Visit 211.org or call 2-1-1 for information about local food banks, meal programs, and other essential services.
- Washington Connection offers a Find Services tool and an Alternative Solutions database, featuring extensive community resources and a reduced-cost services guide.
- Pierce County provides additional information on local food banks and food pantries:
- In Fircrest, the Fircrest Christian Church of Hope on Columbia Avenue offers a Food Bank and Clothing Closet for limited hours on Sundays and Tuesdays.
- Access Pierce is a free, confidential community service connecting residents to local assistance programs. Call 800-572-HELP (4357) or email access@uwpc.org to receive support with housing assistance, financial assistance & benefits, behavioral health services, transportation services, workforce support, and family/early childhood support.
