Whittier Elementary School, built in 1962, serves Kindergarten – 3rd grade students in Fircrest.

The existing Whittier will be replaced with a new school, which is targeted to be completed in time for the Fall 2027 school year.

The project is funded by the $535 million school construction bond voters passed in 2020.

RECENT UPDATES – JUNE 2025

Whittier Design Advisory Committee Holds First Meeting

On June 5th, Whittier teachers, staff, families, community members, and stakeholders gathered for the first Design Advisory Committee (DAC) meeting.  Together, they shared what makes Whittier special and began shaping ideas for the new school.  Committee members worked in small groups, met the design-build team, and offered feedback to help guide the planning process.

The DAC will continue meeting over the next several months to explore design options that support student learning, reflect community values, and create a welcoming space for everyone.

Design-Build Team Visits Whittier

On June 6th, the architect and contractor team working on the new Whittier Elementary spent the day on campus to get a firsthand look at daily life at the school.  They observed drop-off and pick-up routines, visited classrooms, joined students during recess and lunch, and talked with families and staff.  Through interactive activities, students shared what they’d like to see in their new school – from playground ideas to classroom spaces.   This hands-on visit helps ensure the final design reflects the unique spirit of Whittier and meets the needs of the school community.

Plans for Whittier

Whittier’s replacement project is scheduled for construction between 2025-2027.  During this time, students and staff will remain on campus, continuing to learn and grow while their new school is built.
