Whittier Elementary School, built in 1962, serves Kindergarten – 3rd grade students in Fircrest.
The existing Whittier will be replaced with a new school, which is targeted to be completed in time for the Fall 2027 school year.
The project is funded by the $535 million school construction bond voters passed in 2020.

RECENT UPDATES – OCTOBER 2025
Schematic Design
The project team recently completed the 30% schematic design submittal review. The design continues to reflect Whittier’s educational program, community input, and the District’s vision for next-generation learning environments.
Design Advisory Committee Progress
Since June, the Design-Build team has met with the Design Advisory Committee (DAC) five times to gather ideas and feedback for the new school. These discussions have shaped the site plan and building design, aligning educational priorities with community values. Most recently, the DAC reviewed and provided input on schematic floor plans, which incorporate flexibility, safety, and accessibility for all users.
Collaboration with the City of Fircrest
The project team continues active coordination with the City of Fircrest in preparation for the upcoming land use permit submittal. This collaboration is focused on maintaining alignment with City requirements and supporting an efficient review process. The ongoing partnership reflects TPS’s commitment to transparent and proactive engagement with local stakeholders.
Community Engagement and Next Steps
At Whittier’s recent Back-to-School Night, the project team shared design progress and answered questions from families and staff. A Community Open House was held on Wednesday, October 22nd, where the design team was introduced, project features were highlighted, and the vision and timeline for the new Whittier Elementary School were outlined.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May/June 2026, with students and staff remaining on campus throughout the project.
